If you’re looking for an affordable, all-in-one graphics program that can generate sophisticated graphics and simple Web pages, stop your search: is the perfect image editing program for SOHO users and home enthusiasts, and at less than $100, it’s priced to sell. One caveat: This bargain-priced image-editing package is available only for Windows-based PCs. Previous versions of PhotoImpact offered a robust set of Web graphics tools — including the ability to generate optimized JPEG and GIF images, rollovers, animated GIF effects, and image maps. Version 6 goes a step further with the ability to generate complete HMTL pages.
Description: This patch fixes a range of bugs in PhotoImpact 6 including the following issues: • Change font display style in Text Entry Box - separate font.
The key to this new output option is the HTML Text Object. Unlike Web graphics programs that always rasterize your text (turning it into a bitmap), such as, PhotoImpact 6 maintains ASCII text and writes out standard HTML formatting tags. And creating HTML text is a straightforward process: You enter your copy into a dialog box and choose attributes, such as heading levels, relative type sizes, emphasis, and alignment, using convenient drop-down lists or buttons. The new HTML Text Entry dialog box in PhotoImpact 6 lets you format true ASCII text with HTML tags and hypertext links. PhotoImpact 6 also offers several new and enhanced functions to support this emphasis on complete HTML pages.
For example, with earlier versions you could generate a single image tile, and then use an HTML editor to specify the tile as a repeating background; now you can specify the tile as a repeating background within PhotoImpact itself — both because it supports transparent document backgrounds and because it allows you to specify the image tile in the HTML Properties dialog box. And while Component Objects (such as rollovers and banners) are not themselves new, the ability to insert a Component Object as a linked element directly into a composition is a nice new touch. For instance, this capability would allow you to create a multi-state rollover button on the fly and insert it into a larger Web page layout.
PhotoImpact automatically generates all of the JavaScript code and keeps track of the different versions of the image for the up, over, and down states. However, we do wish that the menu commands more clearly indicated when a Component Object will be inserted into the current document and when it will be generated as a new file. When accessed from the Object menu, the Component Designer lets you easily create Web elements and incorporate them into a Web page layout. The HTML Properties dialog box deserves special mention, because it automates many of the housekeeping chores associated with Web design. We applaud the ability to collect all the individual pictures on a Web page into a discrete folder, as well as the ability to convert absolute local paths to relative URLS.
Page Maker There are moments when PhotoImpact 6 feels more like a layout program than an image-editing package. For example, the program lets you link placeholder images to externally stored files.
Linked graphics are efficient, because they can be stored (or downloaded) only once, even though they appear on several different Web pages. In addition, editing the linked picture ensures that the most up-to-date image will appear on all of the pages in your Web site. Upon export, your layout is preserved using HTML tables. Web output from PhotoImpact adheres to the HTML 3.2 specification, which targets the broadest range of browsers. But this prevents you from using absolute positioning or cascading style sheets, which were added with later specifications.
The program, however, does alert you to potential conflicts with the HTML 3.2 specification, such as overlapping objects or improperly sliced buttons. PhotoImpact’s ability to generate an HTML page is a terrific convenience, but don’t confuse this product with a full-featured HTML editor (such as or ). One key difference: PhotoImpact cannot import HTML code for editing; it can only export HTML.
We also found a few shortcomings with PhotoImpact’s implementation of HTML text objects. For example, when you specify a non-standard font, the program does not alert you to the (very real) possibility of font substitution when your page is viewed on the Web. Even when you do specify a standard Windows font (such as Arial), PhotoImpact does not write out the HTML code with alternative font names (such as Helvetica or Geneva), which would keep your page looking consistent on both Macs and PCs. We are big fans of another Ulead product,. Though PhotoImpact offers robust image slicing and optimization functions, there are still some things that SmartSaver does better.
For example, in addition to simple rollovers, SmartSaver can create one-to-many, distance, and audio rollover effects. So we tried to use the SmartSaver export plug-in with PhotoImpact 6 only to discover a bug: On our test system, only the topmost layer of the PhotoImpact file was previewed or exported, making it impossible to use this utility with a complex composition. As we posted this review, a Ulead spokesperson reported that the company had found a workaround for this problem and was working on a fix. New and Improved There are no revolutionary new tools in this release of PhotoImpact, but upgraders will applaud more than a half dozen improvements to the program’s basic feature set. If you find drawing with a Bezier pen difficult, you’ll like the new spline drawing tool, which makes short work of creating curved lines and freeform shapes. The Stamp tool is easier to find because it now has its own slot in the toolbox. In addition, the Stamp tool supports the Picture Tube format, so you can download multi-image stamps from the Web and use them without modification.
In response to user requests, Ulead has added an Object Eraser tool to PhotoImpact 6 (which respects the mask boundaries of floating objects) and a more precise cropping tool. The Text Entry dialog box lets you apply attributes (such as font, color, size, and baseline shift) on a character-by-character basis, making it possible to create zany headlines or multi-paragraph text blocks using only one text object. We particularly liked the new advanced wrap functions, which allow you to flow either text or objects along a path. New tweaking features let you produce great-looking effects. For example, you can modify the shape of the path, repeat the text phrase to fill the path, and even specify the starting and ending sizes of the wrap object.
PhotoImpact now supports a wider range of “text-on-a-path” effects. Here we’ve chosen to repeat a text phrase for the length of the path, and to reduce the starting size of the text. PhotoImpact 6 also offers a wider range of animated GIF effects than past versions. The new Animation Studio lets you create keyframed effects, such as page turns, ripples, and self-solving puzzles, simply by clicking a few options in a dialog box. And the popular Type Effects filters, which can set objects on fire, light them with neon glows, or color them with complex gradients, can now all be animated as well. These functions are not Internet-specific, but they can really add pizzazz to your Web pages.
Making Its Mark Ulead has also added watermarking technology licensed from. This technology, which has been bundled with high-end image editing programs (such as and for several years, allows you to embed a hidden code into your image content that identifies you as the picture’s creator, warns users against copyright infringement, and provides contact information so potential customers can reach you.
The plug-in that ships with PhotoImpact is fully functional, but to take advantage of the technology you must register with Digimarc to receive your watermarking ID. When you purchase PhotoImpact 6 you also receive PhotoImpact Album 6 (a picture cataloging tool) and (a $49.95 frame-based animation program). Ulead is also offering free Web-page hosting to all registered users. The service, which is offered as a co-branded partnership with Homestead.com, was not available for testing at review time. However, Homestead is well known in the Web community for its site building services, which range from personal pages to e-commerce support. PhotoImpact is not geared for professional graphic artists. For example, it is not a suitable choice for a high-end print-production environment, because it lacks CMYK editing tools.
Nor does it offer a high degree of integration with a full-featured HTML editor, as do Adobe Photoshop (with ) and Macromedia Fireworks (with Dreamweaver). Professional Web developers, who may find themselves enamored with PhotoImpact’s ability to generate spiffy animated GIF effects automatically, should check out Ulead’s, a $39.95 program that lets you generate many of the same effects as PhotoImpact from within any Photoshop plug-in-compliant image-editing program. PhotoImpact 6 won’t likely convert a great many Photoshop users; nor should it. But it’s an excellent choice for SOHO and home users who are creating images for local printed output, for digital photography albums, or especially for the Web. With robust image-creation tools, a host of automated effects, Web page layout capabilities, and free Internet hosting, PhotoImpact 6 covers the entire Web development workflow with one easy-to-use product.
